Each year, the Fellows of the Phi Beta Kappa Society honor an individual who has demonstrated scholarly achievement and excellence in his or her chosen field and who, by work and life, has exemplified the goals and ideals of Phi Beta Kappa. Recipients of the Fellows Award have included Pulitzer Prize winning author Eudora Welty, physician and researcher Jonas Salk, historian John Hope Franklin, author and activist Elie Wiesel, coloratura soprano and New York City Opera director Beverly Sills, composer Stephen Sondheim, Librarian of Congress James Billington and Senator George Mitchell.
