Phi Beta Kappa membership is:

  • a mark of distinction for life
  • the gold standard among employers
  • a prestigious network of exceptional people
  • a door to lifelong intellectual opportunities
  • a springboard to helping the arts and sciences thrive

Phi Beta Kappa means being the best you can be.

Be Fascinating

Phi Beta Kappa singled you out because of your academic excellence and integrity. You’ve demonstrated uncommon focus and passion. New ideas excite you and you learn from many viewpoints. You’re reaching for your best—and you’re just getting started.

It’s the same excellence shown by Phi Beta Kappa members President Bill Clinton, theoretical physicist Lisa Randall, author and humorist Mark Twain, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Sonia Sotomayor, NAACP co-founder W.E.B. Du Bois, and Dress for Success founder Nancy Lublin, to name a few.

Be Revolutionary

You see the world as a set of challenges, not barriers. You’re not afraid to challenge the status quo. You have something new to say, and the skills and determination to seize your moment. You want to make your mark on the world.

When you join Phi Beta Kappa, you will become part of a legacy of change leaders that stretches back to the American Revolution.

Be Influential

You cast a vision larger than yourself.  People are energized by your ideas. You have the commitment and persistence to withstand uncertainty. You’re leading by example, because you know you can do it.

Phi Beta Kappa members are dynamic civic and business leaders, noted scientists and researchers, artists and athletes, activists and philanthropists, technology innovators, and trailblazers in all walks of life.

Phi Beta Kappa Member Spotlight

Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, Phi Beta Kappa, Princeton University, was astonished in 1994 to read that web readership had grown more than 2,000 percent in one year. It got him wondering how he could seize upon its growth. He made a list of the top 20 products he thought he could sell online, and with a loan from his parents, began selling books from his garage. Within a month, he was making $20,000 in sales per week. The rest, as they say, is history.

“As a graduate…I find that my Phi Beta Kappa membership helps me stay connected with other alumni who work in the fields I am interested in—it really is quite an extraordinary network of individuals.”

Jamie Gentry Student Affairs Coordinator, University of Chicago, Phi Beta Kappa Kansas State University
