Jakob Highducheck

Jakob Highducheck is a rising third-year Honors student at the College of Charleston double majoring in Biology and Environmental and Sustainability Studies. He is a Charleston Fellow, part of the top scholars program within the Honors College, and a recurring member of the President's List. Originally from Inman, South Carolina, he is deeply interested in the intersection of science, storytelling, and public service. Jakob is a Bonner Leader, completing over 300 hours of service annually with local nonprofits. As a Programs Intern at Charleston Waterkeeper, he conducts water quality research, supports microplastic pollution analysis, contributes to educational outreach, and creates digital outreach materials to engage the public in local environmental issues. He is also a filmmaker and directed First Gen, a documentary that highlights the experiences of first-generation college students. After identifying gaps in institutional support, he developed the film to share these students' stories with an administrative audience, ultimately helping to inspire the creation of a First-Generation Hub initiative at the College of Charleston. Selected in 2024 to participate in the Fulbright U.S.-UK Sustainability Institute at the University of Exeter,  he joined a globally diverse cohort to explore international approaches to environmental leadership, policy, and communication. After graduation, he plans to pursue a graduate degree in environmental science, biology, or science communication.
