Frederick M. Lawrence was invited to be the keynote speaker at the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) conference in Chicago, IL, on November 15, 2018 when he accepted the Arts & Sciences Advocacy Award. Phi Beta Kappa received the award as a society in 2008.  In his keynote address titled "The Nature of the University," Secretary Lawrence asserts that throughout the history of American higher education, the law has played a crucial role in defining the scope, mission, and very nature of colleges and universities.
