• 19 Sunday, Apr The Walters Art Museum Baltimore Association - Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture

Join the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of Greater Baltimore on April 19th at 2:00 p.m. for a tour of the Walters Art Museum's exhibit, Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture. The tour will be led by the curator of the exhibit (and fellow PBK inductee) Christine Sciacca.

This major exhibition celebrates self-taught jewelry artist Douriean Fletcher, whose work spans independent design, film, and television—including iconic pieces created for Marvel Studios' Black Panther franchise and Coming 2 America. Featuring over 100 works alongside costumes by Academy Award–winning designer Ruth E. Carter, the exhibition traces Fletcher's journey from her formative years and early studio in New Orleans to her recent collection for Bergdorf Goodman.

Rooted in the ethos of Afrofuturism, Fletcher's bold, narrative-driven jewelry draws on ancestral traditions—from ancient Egyptian adornment to Zulu beadwork to Ethiopian metalwork—to explore themes of identity, spirituality, and Black sovereignty. The exhibition also features curated selections from the Walters' own collections – including two ancient Egyptian rings that directly inspired Fletcher's designs, connecting the museum's global collections to the work of a groundbreaking contemporary artist.

The exhibit's curator, Christine Sciacca, is Curator of European Art, 300-1400 CE at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. She received her Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.A. in Art History from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Art History from Cornell University, where she was inducted into the Cornell Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Christine was a curator of illuminated manuscripts at the J. Paul Getty Museum for ten years, and she has worked at The Met Cloisters and The British Library. Her research concentrates on Italian, German, and Ethiopian medieval art, with a focus on liturgy, devotional practice, and patronage.

Please meet at the Centre Street Entrance to the museum near 10 W Centre St, Baltimore, MD 21201 no later than 2:00 p.m.
