Dr. Jason Persoff: “How AP Credits Let Me Drop Out of College and Become a Storm-Chasing Physician”

Dr. Jason Persoff is a uniquely interdisciplinary figure: a hospitalist, educator, emergency preparedness leader, storm chaser, and snowflake photographer. He serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and Assistant Director of Emergency Preparedness at UCHealth, where he played a key leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Known for his dynamic teaching and  mentorship, Dr. Persoff blends evidence-based medicine with humanism and crisis strategy, earning widespread respect across medical and academic circles. He is also an accomplished storm chaser with over two decades of experience documenting tornadoes across the Great Plains, often lending his medical skills such as aiding during an EF-5 tornado in Joplin, Missouri, and responding to pandemics, high-consequence infectious diseases, and developing alternate care sites for improving capacity during disasters. His work has been featured on The Weather Channel, Discovery, and major news outlets, where he is known for using an “anatomy and physiology” lens to describe storm structure and behavior.

Outside of medicine and meteorology, Dr. Persoff is an award-winning macro snowflake photographer whose intricate winter images have been featured on Rocky Mountain PBS and Colorado Public Radio. His artistry combines scientific precision with aesthetic mindfulness, inviting viewers to see beauty in fleeting, often overlooked natural moments. Fluent in several languages and a former stand-up comedian and competitive fencer, he approaches life with curiosity, creativity, and a profound sense of service. Whether in the hospital, in the field chasing supercells, or kneeling in the snow photographing crystals, Dr. Persoff embodies a rare blend of science, compassion, and wonder.
