Join the DC Area Association on May 14 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. for a solo exhibit with multifaceted artist and DCPBK member Marilynn Mendell, debuting her series Cellular Drift at ArtHub609!
DCPBK Member Marilynn Deane Mendell has produced art for over forty years. Her work has spanned multiple media types ranging from silk screen prints, non-silver photographs, water colors, graphite and colored pencils, and ink drawings. She has recently illustrated The Tails of Furry Logic, a book about business for young people with her real-life drawings of animals and woodland scenes. The majority of her previous work focused on the natural world like her botanical illustrations. She has taught non-silver photography at the University of Buffalo along with various other art classes at local community centers. Mendell has been a featured artist in Buffalo, NY at Hallwalls Gallery, The Allentown Art Festival, The Kenmore Art Society of Western New York, and locally in a juried duel show at FCCA Gallery, and two juried shows at ArtNight sponsored by Hickok Cole Architects/The Washington Project for the Arts.
"As a lifelong naturalist, my work has often centered around detailed depictions of the living world, but in this series, I deliberately let go of structure," Mendell says of the series. "Limiting myself to simple black ink on paper and releasing expectations, I allowed intuition and daily walks through the woods to guide me. This unbounded approach became a quiet act of healing—each mark a breath, each form a step toward peace and a happy path, mapped in ink, because those friends would want nothing more. The results speak for themselves: these pals will be remembered and honored forever!"
"Nature has always been a grounding force in my life. On these walks, I encounter small wonders—fungi emerging from the forest floor, frost-laced leaves, the quiet glance of a bird—each a moment of stillness and connection. These encounters informed the drawings, which hold the delicate presence of these observations. They are not literal translations, but rather felt impressions—visual meditations on what it means to witness, to let go, and finally, to create a positive remembrance. The series invites viewers to slow down, reflect, and enter a space of inner stillness."
